Marketing is an essential part of the freelancer’s job; it helps them engage with prospective clients, showcase their work, and find new opportunities. But, it can be difficult to master – especially for those who aren’t comfortable ‘selling themselves’.
Fortunately, there are many ways to market yourself effectively. You can use paid advertising to target specific demographics and reach potential customers at scale, you can host webinars or speak at industry events, you can create well-crafted ad campaigns on social media platforms like Google and Facebook, and more. The key is to be consistent and persistent – nothing happens overnight, but the more you put in the better chance you’ll have of achieving your goals.
One of the most important aspects of successfully marketing yourself is identifying your audience and niche. This involves looking at who is seeking your services and what kind of work you want to do. Then, you can narrow down your target audience and start reaching out to them directly. For example, if you know that your target audience is attending certain webinars or business conferences, then you can go out of your way to attend those events.
By consistently putting yourself out there and making yourself known, people will begin to recognise you and your work. As a result, they’ll be more likely to approach you when an opportunity comes up that matches your skill set.
For instance, photographer Jerry started sharing a series of portraits on his Instagram account, which caught the eye of a travel magazine who approached him about working with them.
Marketing yourself also ensures that you have a steady stream of work. By actively searching out opportunities to collaborate with others and pitching yourself to potential clients, you’ll always have something on the horizon that will keep your bank balance happy. This is a much more sustainable model than waiting around for the phone to ring and hoping you get lucky enough to land a project.
Ultimately, the best way to market yourself is to be genuine and authentic about your skills and experiences. By being genuine and authentic, you’ll be more likely to build rapport with your audience and help them to understand why you’re the right person for the job. If you can build that trust, then you’ll be able to sell yourself without feeling uncomfortable.
And, if you can sell yourself without feeling uncomfortable, then you’ll be well on your way to success as a freelancer. Good luck!
